\u201cGod Only Knows\u201d – A Chat Between God and Satan<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n

The following is a story \u2014 probably not a true story \u2014 that may have been told by an Auschwitz survivor. It goes like this. God and Satan have an unscheduled meeting around the beginning of 1944, over 56 years before their usually scheduled meeting at the start of each century. Satan calls the meeting, flabbergasted by the sheer enormity of the carnage going on in the death camps, especially Auschwitz.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark>: How can you let it go on?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark>: What do you mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: What do I mean? You must be losing it, but you are surely not losing it to me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong>: I no longer meddle in their affairs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: Their affairs? They are annihilating your so-called chosen people.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong>: Are they?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: My goodness! They are and at an alarming rate. They have created a hell of their own; they have created Hell and are sending to it every Jew that they can get their claws on, as well as every Gypsy and freethinker.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong>: They will eventually stop.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: I am not sure that they will, and if they do, it may be too late for the Jews.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong>: They will be stopped sometime next year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: So you do not mind it at all.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong>: I do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: But not enough to save them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong>: Why do you care?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: Even I recognise that they have not done anything that warrants such barbarity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong>: You did not mind all the other injustices that occurred in the past.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: I did to some degree, but they all pale in comparison.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong>: Do they now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: That is it; you have lost it. There is no doubt about it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong>: Careful there!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: Even I would not create or oversee an Auschwitz.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong>: It cannot be that bad.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: Have you even taken a look? It must be stopped.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>: It cannot be.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: It must be.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>: I forbid it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: How about a bargain?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>: I will not be fooled again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: I will let you have all their souls if you stop it right now.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>: No!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: No?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>: No.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: I will let you have ten percent of all my souls.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>: No!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: What do you want, then?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>: You are the one bargaining.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: You have to give me something.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: In New Zealand?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>: Yes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Satan<\/mark><\/strong>: You will stop it and purge it from history.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God<\/mark><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>: I will not do the latter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
